In memory of Phyllis Lei Furumo

Phyllis_Lei_Furumoto
It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Phyllis Lei Furumoto on 31st March 2019.

She was the lineage bearer of Reiki, Usui Shiki Ryoho and Granddaughter of Hawayo Takata.

She did much to spread and develop the knowledge of Reiki throughout the world and was a supporter of The Reiki Association and its work in the UK.

My thoughts, Love and Light go to her partner, Joyce.

Happy 150th Birthday Dr Mikao Usui!

15th August 2015 is the celebration of the 150th birthday of Dr Mikao Usui, the man who re-discovered Universal Life Force Energy, known around the world as Reiki.

It was Dr Usui's endless curiosity, study and commitment that enabled him to connect to Reiki and discover the importance of healing the mind, body and spirit to bring balance on all levels.

Dr Usui referred to Reiki as, "The secret method that summons happiness, the miraculous medicine that is effective against all kinds of illness."

So, on the day of his 150th birthday, I give thanks to Dr. Usui and for all that he brought to the world.

Thank you for the gift of Reiki, from which I continue to benefit in so many ways.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Usui!

Just How Did All This Start?!

Fifteen years ago in April 2000, I completed my Reiki Master Teacher training.

This was a huge step for me, marked the end of my ME/CFS and was of great personal significance.

I never intended to becom a Reiki practitioner, I just wanted to regain my health and vitality; but when that happened with daily self-healing and in a relatively short space of time, I was so amazed I wanted to share this wonderful thing called Reiki.

I didn't put a neon sign on the roof of my house advertising "Reiki Here!", I just asked that 'Upstairs' would send me the people it was right to work on. It began in a small way - family, then friends, then ex-work colleagues....I did many hours of free treatments so that I could learn about and gain experience of, giving Reiki to others. It was nerve wracking at first but slowly and surely the Reiki guided me on how best to work.

Setting Up In Practice - Where Do The Clients Come From?

I then reached a point when I felt I knew what I was doing, I was confident in how to deliver a full session of hands-on Reiki, what was likely to be felt during a session and how the receivers may react. I was very much drawn to practising professionally, and that is exactly what happened. Strangers started to find their way to my door (still no neon sign on my roof!) and I started to work professionally.

Word spread and the client list grew - don't ask me how, it just felt right to be doing it and people found their way to me. To this day I don't really advertise, I simply ask that the people it is right for me to work on will find me. Yes, a website helps, but I am just one of millions of people in cyberspace doing this, but it is always lovely when people return or new people pop up. Long term clients have become firm friends, they recommend me to their friends and family and so it spreads out in lovely, positive ripples.

I never stop learning from Reiki; how it works to give peace, calm and relaxation on all levels (physical, mental, spiritual and emotional), clarity and insight, balance and positivity. It is lovely when clients report back on how Reiki has helped them and it is a privilege to be a part of that process.

Eek! Running My First Reiki Course

The same is true for my route into running Reiki courses and teaching and attuning students. When I felt I might be ready to run my first course I was approached by a lady whilst I was doing a Reflexology demonstration in Chesterfield. I worked on her feet but all she wanted to know about was Reiki! She took my leaflet and the next week phoned and booked a Reiki session...which then turned into quite a number of weekly sessions.

Eventually she stated that she wanted to learn Reiki for herself. "Great!" I said, then visibly paled when she said she wanted to learn from me. I explained that I didn't feel ready to run a course, would have to write a course manual and course structure and, quite frankly, didn't know where to begin. I encouraged her to learn elsewhere but she was adamant that I would attuned her. We agreed that she would contact me every now and then and when I was ready she would be my first student.

Months passed with me disappointing her but eventually I had the stirrings of feeling ready, so we set a date which gave me six weeks to get my act together and get writing a manual. What an angst-ridden few weeks they were, but I needed the pressure of a deadline to really get my ideas together and start to focus. I continually asked 'Upstairs' to help me and a manual was born, as well as a logical structure for a two day course.

A couple of weeks before the course was due to run, I started to think that it would be good to have another student on board. I felt it would be less intense than a one-to-one course and be good to have a third person to share ideas with and have input from. I sent up this very thought and a week later I was contacted by a man who was desperate to learn Reiki but didn't know anyone who taught it.

That first course is still vivid to me. Two very different people who opened up to Reiki in very different ways. I learnt so much from them and will always be grateful to them for putting their trust in me as their Reiki Master Teacher and enabling me to take the first steps in running courses.

Where Do All These Reiki Students Come From?

Over the years I have had students travel from all over the British Isles as well as all over the world to come and learn Reiki from me. It astounds me that someone will travel across the globe eg from Kuwait, Japan, Australia, Tasmania or China to a small village in Derbyshire to learn Reiki from me. It might seem crazy, but if you operate from a point of 'send me those for whom it is right for me to teach', then it makes absolute sense. How would these people find their way to me if they weren't being guided to do so? This is what Reiki is all about and how it works and it is fabulous to be a part of it.

I have lost count of the number of students I have trained in all levels of Reiki over the years but feel blessed to be able to pass on such a wonderful healing energy to each and every one of them. Hearing the many, varied and surprising stories of how Reiki has improved students' lives is the joy of being a part of their journies.

Blessings to you all, clients and students alike!
